Watch me call

Video calling capabilities of the N91 has been a topic of discussion on HardwareZone in the past. fade_white noted that the N91 only has one camera and concluded that N91 will not be capable of handling video calls.

Our devices only have one camera, but is still capable of making video calls. You can have pre-set images that show to the other party.

N91's video calling capability has also been discussed by members of Mobile-Review, Chip forum (German), inside-handy forum (German) and Sogi (Chinese).

esjpchest talks N91

esjpchest's blog has put together an in-depth review of the N91 touching on the audio capabilities. The playback quality and possible enhancements are discussed along with the other main features of the phone.

Vibrating N91

Jaws on GSMArena and dantherman82 on Esato have expressed concerns that the N91 will not have a vibrate feature when launched. There is no mention of vibrate in the official Nokia spec list.

Our prototype devices have vibrate function, as can be seen in the picture below.

Photo review N91

Virgile on Planete Nokia has has taken some excellent pictures of the N91 along with some of the newer Nseries models (N71/N80). Included are examples of pictures taken by an N91 and a video of N91. Of great note is the fact that the pictures show the disk utilities available. You are able to scan, defragment, and format the hard drive (quick or full format).

Another conversation on Planete Nokia has been set up to answer questions, this can be viewed here (French). These pictures have also been spotted by members of Mobile-Review and GSMArena.

Flash and autofocus

Past confusions have been expressed in HardwareZone over whether or not the N91 camera has flash and autofocus. The devices we have do not include a camera flash or autofocus, however the 20x digital zoom is very smooth and night mode is a very nice touch.

2006: the 'must have' phone year!

An article by AFP focusing on the importance of music capabilities on mobile phones has been picked up on Physorg, Cellphonegeeks and Multimedia and Technology blog.

"This year is set to be the year when the mobile phone could become the all-in-one, must-have gadget for music fans."

A number of different devices have been mentioned, including Sony Ericsson Walkman and the Motorola ROKR. Nokia Nseries is described as the big daddy of them all and the N91 is said to be the top model in the series. Nokia top multimedia exec Anssi Vanjoki describes the difference between the Nokia devices and competitor devices as:

“ours is a multimedia computer.”

Debate on what features manufacturers should focus their research and development on have been going on in MobileBurn.

What’s more important? What’s more developable? Join in and have your say.

Laptop Magazine has also joined the debate over music phones and included an analysis of seven different devices in its January edition. The N91 is labeled as the upcoming hero device.

Only a few more weeks?

A Finnish newspaper (Taloussanomat) today reported that Nokia's multimedia devision president Anssi Vanjoki has announced that the N91 will be available in only a few weeks. This was picked up by a Finnish member of GSMArena. It is thought that Nokia are currently finalising the firmware.

On Mobile-Review they have been talking about the same article, however their interpretation of the article is that production of N91 will start in a few weeks and release will be the end of March.

Read the whole article here (Finnish). A member of GSMArena has now attempted to translate the article, this can be read here.

Slide down, slide off?

Mr Pink57 on Howard forums has been talking about his first hand experiences of the N91 and has some great things to say about the quality of audio. He does however have concerns about the fragility of the sliding cover which holds the dedicated music keys. Others have posted similar messages elsewhere (see comments on Esato Forum).

N91's recent drop test success strongly suggests that there's nothing to worry about in this department with N91 way outperforming an iPod in the same test. Read more on this topic below:

Can Samsung compete?

Samsung have announced their latest model, the i300x. It will have a 4GB hard drive, 3.5mm headphone jack, 1.3 MP camera and a microSD expansion slot. With these features, it is being talked about as a contender to the N91. Sam comments this on the N91 spec list on GSMArena on 14th January.

The i300x has the potential to compete with the N91, however some say N91 still holds the upper hand, with key features such as WIFI and 3G capabilities.

A2DP compatible phones

Members of Nokia developer's community have been discussing A2DP (Advanced Audio Distributed Profile) compatible phones on the market.

When N91 is released, it will be one of the few phones on the market to have this feature, along with the 8800 and 8801.

Read and contribute to similar conversation taking place on Howard forums.

--- Update ---

Latest information from Nokia confirms that the N91 is not A2DP compatible.

Cradle your baby

There's been some recent discussion about The N91 desk cradle (DT-10).

Some web users seem unsure over whether or not it is possible to transfer data from your phone to your computer at the same time. Iceman5 on My-Symbian helps to clear this up.

Sushi and N91, what more could you want?

Jayvee on Cellphone9 has been lucky enough to have a meeting with some Nokia representatives who brough an N91 along. He finds the device to be much smaller than expected and says that the pictures online don't do the phone justice.

Get connected

New pictures taken by Chokia on Mobile-Review have shown off the three holes (or "ports") of the N91. They are the MiniUSB socket, the power socket and the 3.5mm jack.

N91 vs Nano

The latest edition of T3 magazine includes a "rated head to head" between Nokia N91 and Apple iPod nano 4GB. The comparison is introduced as a chance to see:

"whether convergence will win out over dedication"

The topics that are then reviewed are size, versatility, navigation, fragility, price and style. The iPod does come out as the winner. The article has no mention of music quality, which is suprising thinking this is a comparison between two MP3 players. It also looks over the fact that the N91 can store three times the number of songs. The Nano's ability to store 1000 songs is mentioned but not the 3000 the N91 can store. The review also only briefly mentions the convergence of N91. Doesn't seem fitting as this was supposedly an article to compare a convergent device against a dedicated device.

N91 in India

Online speculation continues that the N91 is available in India. Members of MobileBurn have been wrestling with this one. Claims have also been made in this thread, also on MobileBurn.

The official word is that N91 is not available anywhere in the world at this time so don't believe the hype! There are a number of prototype devices floating around and numerous scams being run to sell fake phones.

The official Indian Nokia microsite continues to show the N91 on the "upcoming models" list.

A story highlighting the key functions of the N91 has been uploaded onto the official Nseries website. Keep up to date with Lulu, Cai and Huang as they "Groove on the go" highlighting the ability to store, transfer and organise your music on your phone on the go.

The story covers other features of the device as well, a number of accessories get a mention. The camera is also shown, the story claims the N91 has autofocus and a flash, this is however not mentioned anywhere in its spec list, this has interested some members of HardwareZone.

Bouncing mobile phone hard drives

Cornice have announced that they are producing new 8GB and 10GB mobile phone hard drives. They have also created a new video in an attempt to alley the fears over fragility of all mobile phone hard drives.

The video has fueled the argument between HDs and Memory cards. Is the balance swinging to HDs? Max_wedge on Esato Forum certainly thinks so...

Decisions... decisions... decisions

On the Nokia Developer's Community Dark_n80 has started a debate between some of the Nokia Nseries devices, notably the N90, N91 and N80. Are the newer Nseries models taking the attention away from the first models announced?

"The N80 looks like a multi-media monster, even more so than the N91." Vane on What Mobile Forum.

This is a decision a lot of people are going to be considering in the coming months. The conclusion on Nokia Developer's Community (perhaps unsuprisingly) seems to be that it really depends on your needs. shellboy and phantomx2 think the N91 comes into its own with the 4GB hard disk.
