Emailing on N91

We have received some questions from you about email encryptions on the phone.

N91 will support POP3 or IMAP4 connection. Both connections will support StartTLS, or SSL(Secure Sockets Layer)/TLS(Transport Layer Security) data encryption separately on either outgoing or incoming messages.

The standard ports 995 and 993, but you can define your own port for maximum flexibility. Here are a couple of pictures to show some settings.

N91 fanatics?

Squeaky1 has given E46Fanatics members information about the expected 2nd of March release date. This has sparked some debate around price. 2000_328CI doesn’t understand why the N91 is twice the price of the K750i, commenting on the similar camera and the MP3 player capabilities.

N91 also has Symbian 60 OS, WIFI as well as the 3.5mm music connectivity and twice the HD capacity. The overall sound quality on N91 is also astonishing. Check out optiker2000's comments on N91 sound quality from a recent prototype review.

N91: March 2nd Release Date?

Over on Mobile-Review members have been discussing the an alleged tip off to CoolTechZone from Nokia insider confirming the March release. This has prompted renewed speculation that this is all bluster and N91 will never see production.

As reported last week on this blog, Nokia have confirmed N91 will ship in Q1 2006.

Thanks to Hadi for referencing our post and setting the record straight.

Have your say by joining the discussion.

Q1 2006 shipping for N91 confirmed

The confusion and speculation over the release date of the N91 continues. MocoNews have reported that the N91 launch has been pushed back until the third quarter of 2006. Gizmodo have picked up this information and included it in their article on the reason for the delay. You can read the UK version or the US version.

Nokia have recently confirmed to wordontheblog that the N91 will definitely ship during the first quarter of 2006.

Read relevant articles on the release date here.

** update. MocoNews has now retracted 3rd quarter information from the site **

CoolTechZone has reported some insider information that the N91 will be released on the 2nd March in Taiwan. This has also been picked up by Engadget and SMS Text News.

Pohjakallio talks on DRM issues

It has recently been confirmed by Nokia's Pekka Pohjakallio that the reason for the original delay of the N91 was the inclusion of DRM. This delay pushed the N91's release from before Xmas to first quarter 2006. The register thinks that the N91 will be able to give the iPod a run for its money.

This has also been picked up by Darla Mack and Bizkero blogs. You can join conversation on delay on Mobile9 and GSMArena.

Simplifying music

GSMarena members have again been talking about the launch of N91 and N80. There are also cries for an upgrade to the N-Gage range. An article on Gamasutra (also picked up by Nicolas on pasta&vinegar blog) shows that there are plans for an expansion on the N-gage range, it also mentions N91 as simplifying the music experience.

The 3.5mm jack has certainly done this, along with the playlists function which can be seen in the picture below.

Convergence

Members of MacRumors have been discussing the rumour that the ROKR will have it’s song limit removed. The conversation has moved onto the idea of convergence in a phone. Jacobj is convinced that the time will come when convergence will lead to a camera/phone/MP3/video player all in one, Fireburst mentions the N91.

N91 is a convergent device, but is convergence the way of the future? Have your say here.

What does the remote do?

TheRogue asked for more information on what the remote control does, so here's a quick summary:

The 3.5mm jack is visable at the top. On the left hand side (as you look at the picture) you can see the volume control and the remote control hold function. On the front there is the standard playback controls, play/pause, forward, back, stop, along with the call answer/end button. Above this to the right hand side of the Nokia writing you can see the microphone.

Bluetooth approval

friedbrains, a follower of Bluetooth, has alerted the Howard forums members to the recent Bluetooth Qualification approval of the N91.

Even though the Bluetooth has only just been officially qualified, ours has been working fine. Here’s a video of us transferring a 1.54MB song from one N91 to another.

3.5mm jack and remote

Amidst hot debate on Mobile-Review over mobile phone brands, sidneylopsides has been asking about the 3.5mm jack of the N91 and the remote control.

On the device itself, there is a separate input for the remote, right next to the 3.5mm jack, this can be seen on the picture below, along with the remote control jack.

Keypad experience

Funkertosh has visited the Nokia Experience Center at the Beverly Center in LA. They have a wide selection of working phones including N91. Some Howard forums members have expressed concerns over the size of the keypad.

We can reassure that the keys are small, but they are very usable. Here's a picture which shows the exact size of the buttons.

Steroids

Phones review have described the N91 as a jukebox on steroids before going into the 4GB hard drive, 3000 songs and that it is like a mini iPod. Does the sleek new design make you smile as well? Something has made one of our N91s give off a great big cheeky grin.

Have a read of the whole article here.

Going once, going twice, sold

Members of OSNN forum have been discussing Ebay and the abundance of scams taking place. themafia.69 cannot understand why people would attempt to buy a phone on Ebay before it is released.

There are many auctions on Ebay for N91, of which 99% are fake, the other 1% may be offering prototype devices for sale. We recommend you do not take the risk, and wait the short time for the real phone to be released.

If it is a prototype, you can check the IMEI, if it starts with 004400 then it will be a prototype. This can be seen on ours.

Questions and answers

JKD’s questions on What Mobile have already been answered, but we thought it best to cover it here too.

1) Yes N91 is Symbian, series 60, 3rd edition.

2) The hard drive can store anything you like, here is the set up of the hard drive folders. We have also added a “Work” folder ourselves, storing Powerpoint, Word and Excel files.

3) N91 is a 3G phone, but it will still work with non 3G SIM cards. This one is running a PAYG O2 SIM, just means the WAP download speed is slower and no 3G calling. Who needs WAP when you have WLAN.

In a heartbeat

Female first have been talking about what mobiles users have, some have moved onto talking about what phones they want in the future. Thomas is thinking about N91 and would snap one up in a heartbeat, but doesn’t know when it will be released.

Let those females know what phone you have or desire here.

Dogs on phones

It’s upgrade time for Deep on Dogs On Acid forum, he's looking for a new Nokia. A number of models are suggested, N91 gets an especially warm welcome from skeletor957.

February 16, 2006

Sound quality

GSMArena have been discussing the sound quality of the N91 and how it compares with the Sony Ericsson phones. optiker2000 is lucky enough to have both an N91 and a K750, and definitely prefers the sound quality of the N91.

The 3.5mm jack of the N91 makes it possible to use aftermarket headphones with the device, this improves the possible sound quality greatly. Of course, not saying the quality of the sales package headphones are bad.

Read other articles about headphones here, or have your say on sound quality here.

N91 vs W950i

Members of Esato forum have directly compared the N91 with the newly announced W950i. There is some confusion over why phones which are not publicly available are being compared.

Themarques goes on a rant about the biased nature of some of the members of the forum, claiming they will vote SE whatever the spec. Brings up an interesting point of which they would choose if the badges were swapped.

Music Shop

An article on About-tones blog has described the features of the N91, it picks out the Music shop feature which allows you to download music over the air. We thought we'd take this opportunity to show a picture of the Music shop on N91.

There are a number of music shops currently available online, Nokia have teamed up with Loudeye and created a platform which allows this service on mobiles.

Traveling with N91

Arief Sundjaja has visited India, Indonesia and Vietnam to attend a series of the Nokia Tour events in the APAC region. He has blogged his experiences of the cities visited on the Chronicles of a peppered heart blog. He suggests that hiring models to showcase phones is not the best idea, as they do not know much about the phones themselves. Looks like they're doing a fine job to us.

UMA VoIP for Nokia

Nokia have announced that the N80 and the 6136 will be UMA compatible when released. Read more on UMA (Unlicensed Mobile Access) here.

VoIP will allow users to make calls through the internet. With N91 supporting WIFI it will make this easier, however UMA is not available on N91. Third party companies have been working on developing an application which will work on other models. These include Skype who have recently announced Pocket PC 2.0.

Symbian 9 applications

Members of Mobile-Review have been talking about the up coming phones which use the Symbian 9 operating system, alexandr3 gives a comprehensive list, of course including N91. The conversation moves onto the ability to use currently available applications on this new version of Symbian.

As NuLL[PL] says, existing application files must be recompiled before they are compatible with the latest Symbian 9 phones.

Sony Ericsson fight back

At the 3GSM conference in Barcelona Sony Ericsson have announced a new model, the W950i. scotsboyuk on SE-NSE forums sees this phone being aimed to compete with N91 with a 4GB flash memory, touchscreen and 3G network support (where network exists). The lack of camera and video calling has not discouraged Sony Ericsson fans on se-nse forum, other SE fans on Esato have been talking about this newly announced phone.

Viipottaja is more diplomatic on MobileBurn, still preferring the N91 because of its wifi, camera and 3.5mm jack.

Justin on his Live Journal has also compared this new device with the N91.

XpressMusic

Mobile-Review members have been discussing the music player of the N91 and questioning its variance from other XpressMusic devices.

Nokia have announced four XpressMusic devices, the N91, 3250, N80 and N71. XpressMusic is designed to give users quick and easy access to their music with dedicated keys. As well as this, the N91 and the 3250 (the baby N91) include the equalizer and shuffle functions, and include a 3.5mm jack. The N80 is more dedicated towards professional usage, whereas the N71 is a multimedia dedicated phone. Neither include a 3.5mm jack

Next cool smartphone?

Vipen has started a discussion on the next cool smartphone on AVForums. Concerns over the size of the Nseries have been expressed. This inspired us to take some pictures of the whole Nseries, along with some other phones we found lying around.

Bluetooth SIM access profile

Nokia have announced that Bluetooth SIM Access Profile will be a standard feature in the Nokia N91’s software. This is good news as it means that certain car kits, for example the Nokia 616 can access ID data stored on the SIM cards of Phones. It also means no more fiddling around swapping SIM cards or purchasing separate numbers for use in car.

This announcement was picked up by Phil on S60 blog and from there on Abdul Aziz’s Journal.

Shiny N91

Naazir_khan on MMC Forums has claimed that the N91 will not be released until July, also feels that all the recently announced Nokia phones have dingy plastic bodies.

The official launch date remains as first quarter 2006. Here’s a picture of the “dingy plastic bodies”.

Contrary to opinion N91's all stainless steel. You can even see a reflection of a hand from when the picture was taken, nice and shiny.

What mookle wants mookle gets

A request has been made by mookle for comparison shots between N90 and N91... no problem, coming right up. All these pictures were taken on the default settings, these are both 2 megapixel cameras. The main difference in specs is the Carl Zeiss lens on the N90. Here is two pictures taken by the N90: (click images to view larger versions)

And now, the same things shot on an N91:

As you can see there is only a small difference in the quality, the N90 comes out on top, the Carl Zeiss lens does some marvellous things.

Which do you prefer mookle?

Lights, camera, action?

Members of AVForums have been discussing the merits of N70 and other new devices. Deepsand pops in with a comment that the only flaw of the N91 is that if you knock the lens on the N91 you activate the camera in your pocket.

Definitely not the case with the N91. The 2 megapixel camera can be activated through the menu or having it set as one of your softkeys; so no pocket shots!!

Keylock

break-r is one of the lucky few who has experienced the N91 first hand, he tells members of Howard forums about the keylock system and doesn’t like the design of having it at the top.

The top keylock is actually very clever, it locks the accessible keys (music dedicated keys, menu button, softkeys and call function keys). However, when you open the slide cover the keypad becomes active, and is locked again once the slider is pushed up. Clever, eh?

AD-42W Wireless Audio Gateway

jolo over on the Mobile-Review spotted this bluetooth audio adapter that DAFE claims will allow N91 owners to plug the adaptor into their stereo and play their N91 MP3s remotely using Bluetooth. The adaptor uses A2DP technology to achieve this, which the N91 is fully capable of. Thanks to Marc on Engadget who wrote about this. Chris on Mobility Site has also picked this up.

--- Update ---

Latest information from Nokia confirms that the N91 is not A2DP compatible.

Help Touya

Mobile-Review members have been responding to Touya's request for more information on MP3 mobile devices. FaWzy suggests N91 could well be worth a look although points out price may be an issue. A contract N91 may be the answer.

Although no firm news on network uptake has been released, its pretty safe to assume they'll be some good deals out there.

Check a recent n91.wordontheblog post on contract chatter here.

Say cheese

Brush up on your Francais and read this article in Mobilmag.ch - a 'tete a tete' between a range of 2 megapixel mobile devices, N90 incuded.

The article has been picked up on Mobile-Review with futurenow querying why N91 - with its 2 megapixel camera - has not been included. Probably because all others, including the N90 are on the market and N91 is soon to launch. N91 is also a music device first and foremost, with N90 being the photograher's choice with its Carl Zeiss lens.

Which is best? Have your say here.

What's this FCC stuff all about?

Ramintop from Mobile-Review has asked the collective what the FCC is and what does it mean for N91. Although HABEEB's spot on in his answer, its probably also worth covering here. FCC stands for Federal Communications Commission - an American body responsible for 'regulating interstate and international communications'. Website can be found here.

All N91 fans need know is that they need to tick the box before N91 can be released in the US market.

Oh and FaWzy, it doesn't stand for 'Federal Computer Creeps' Wink

WLAN N91

Confusion on My-Symbian has been expressed over whether N91 will have wifi capabilities. Hogan77 has got hold of a picture of the manual with wifi capabilities crossed out. We have been using wifi on our prototypes quite happily, here's a video.

The manual we have also shows the full Wireless Lan features, this can be downloaded from here.

Plug and play N91

Members of Mobile-Review have been discussing whether the N91 is an UPnP device. There is no need for Jolo to doubt this any longer, the user manual confirms that the N91 is UPnP compatible. This has also been confirmed by All About Symbian.

Wireless Internet iPods?

MacRumours members have been chewing over the idea of an iPod with wireless access capabilities on the back of the recent Times online article. Consensus is they love the idea of a future iPod having this capability.

Kadajawi mentions that Nokia are already doing this with N91.

Buy Ebay N91 and see in the dark

According to this Esato thread, buying an N91 off Ebay could be good for your eyesight. Fox warns you're more likely to receive a box of carrots as the N91 has yet to launch anywhere.

Naked N91

MobileBurn users have been looking at pictures of the N91 laid out bare. They are either interested in the internal components of the phone, or just like smashing things. The pictures were taken by the FCC whilst testing the device.

Underpowered?

Some of the Esato guys have been talking about Nseries battery power again. (sc)chronos mentions hearing about some serious battery issues with N91. The battery spec is as follows: standby time of 190 hours and between 3 and 4 hours talk time.

N91 uses the standard BL-5C Nokia battery (used by a number of nokia handsets 6230, 6600 and N-Gage). Replacements and spares are easy and cheap to get. Have a look on JustPhones and Mobile Place for current prices. Most sales packages also come with a spare battery.

Emmerdale trial N91s

The N91 has been spotted on the UK TV soap opera “Emmerdale”. Neo on What Mobile forum has claimed that the whole UK supply of the device was being used in product placement on the show.

FCC approves N91

The N91 has recently been approved by the FCC (The Federal Communications Commission). This means that for a mobile phone to released in the states it must gain FCC approval. Visit the FCC N91 page for detailed information on the results of tests carried out, along with some pictures of the inside of the device. It is also possible to download the user manual (.pdf) for N91 from here.

Apocalypso has shared this information with members of Symbian Freak and Howard forums who have been discussing the release date and the network operators expected to offer the N91.

This news was also picked up on ubergizmo and phone Arena.

Flash player for N91

The prototype models we have include "Flash Player", which with a little further investigation you discover it is "Flash Lite".

Upgraded earphones for N91

VR-Zone members have been debating whether you are able to use external headphones with N91. The answer is definately yes and here's a pic of one of our demo devices hooked up with some aftermarket headphones.

Below that is a more slick and professional Nokia press shot with Bose headphones.

The standard units are by no means poor. Here's a shot of the supplied headphones which are more handy if you are on the move and have limited space.

Stuff essentials 2006

Stuff Magazine has announced "This year's most wanted gadgets", Stuff Essentials 2006. In the 3G mobiles category N91 is ranked 2nd, just behind the Motorola V3x. They are very impressed by the thin stylings of the V3x. The N91 is described as:

"The iPod might be quaking in its boots after hearing about this all-rounder. Not just a top-class mobile with a 2megapixel camera but also a fully fledged music player with a 4GB hard disk."
