Hungry for an N91!

Flicker27-09-06.bmp

What do you think of this bizarre N91 tagged Flickr snap by Roland? For a music dedicated device, the camera (2Megapixel) is pretty impressive! As for $8.99 all you can eat fish and chips…

Future of the podcast

Do you download podcasts to your N91? If you want to find out more about podcasts, read this post by mobilemonte on 3G. There are some interesting points raised about the future of podcasts, and how we will find and retrieve them.

Click here to take a look. It’s not a quick read so get comfy. Follow this link for a previous post on podcasts.

Get buff with the N91

The N91 is quickly becoming the mobile of choice for health conscious people who want to listen to 'Eye of the Tiger' and other motivational music during exercise. Newly converted gym fanatic J says his new N91 is a godsend when he’s 'tweaking the guns'!

The HS-28 headset gets a special mention. J thinks they are great quality, especially for for a headset provided as standard.

N91 default theme

M3zzr wants to know why, after turning off and charging the N91, the applied theme is deactivated and replaced by the default theme.

N91 Guru has got it right again. If your applied theme is saved to the hard drive, your device will return to the default theme when you turn the N91 off and charge it. This happens regardless of your firmware version.  Save themes to device memory to overcome this.

N91 sounding good

The guys at Howard forums are having a enthralling debate about music players and their capabilities. Rapolu loves the N91 and reckons the audio clarity is tops.

To clear up Bluetooth’s queries, the N91 has stereo widening and L/R balance, as well as an 8-band equalizer which allows you to enjoy your audio in exactly the way you like it.

N91 SMS Accelerator

What Mobile community member Dinalli has an N91 which hangs when sending a text message. Lambert suggests an online firmware update, and provides a link to an SMS Accelerator download.

This is very sound advice. A firmware update will solve any niggling problems, and the SMS Accelerator app does exactly what the title suggests. However, Dinalli is concerned that updating firmware online will wipe the N91's data. To clarify, the hard drive is completely safe but he'll need to back up the device memory otherwise contacts and user-installed apps will be lost.

Click here to help Dinalli out. Follow this link for a previous post concerning online firmware updates.

Nseries gets Live Search from Microsoft

Nokia and Microsoft have teamed up to give Nseries users the benefit of Windows Live Search. This new feature is available on all Series 60 Nokia devices.

This is great news! It's a step forward for mobile web browsing and can only be a good thing for N91 users.

c|net newsgroup member Reuters has blogged about this new deal, click here for a look.

N91 - mobile.thepodlounge

Calling all N91 users! The guys at PodLounge have just launched a new podcasting directory specifically designed with you in mind. The new PodLounge service is purpose-built for mobile devices. The result? A podcast directory that you can use your N91 to easily search and download from.

To learn more, check out this blog. To start downloading podcasts, type www.mobile.thepodlounge.com into your N91 browser's address bar.

N91 rally

If, like me, you love racing games, then you'll love V-Rally 3D - a cool piece of software supplied by Khatulistiwa.

It’s free to download on GSM-Forum so hit this link to feed your gaming addiction.

N91 Silent Profile

Pogiewun wants to know why, when using a headset with an N91 set to silent, the device doesn’t automatically answer calls. This is because, in silent mode, the N91 assumes you do not currently wish to take a call.

It is possible to personalise the silent profile so that the automatic answer function will work:

Menu > Tools > Profiles > Silent > Personalise > Ringing Type > Ring

However you have to change the ‘ringing type’ from silent to a ringing option, which does defeat the point of a silent profile!

N91 enthusiasts

Mayhs and GT4010 are flying the N91 flag over in Howard forums. Not surprisingly, the N91's music player gets a HUGE shout. Mayhs even claims the N91’s camera is the best 2 Megapixel option out there.

Click this link to have your say.

Best Nokia

The guys at GSMArena are debating which Nokia is the best device of all time. Jaws would pick the N91, but concedes that different devices suit different people's tastes and requirements.

If you want an amazing video camera get an N93. However, the N91 is better suited for the music addict who won't go anywhere without their tunes - and the video quality's pretty good too.

Format N91 on power up

Sakers installed a buggy N91 app and now cannot turn the device on without the alarm sounding instantly and continuously (what a headache!). Michal Jerz has helped out with a link to directions on how to format the device on start up. Follow these, very awkward, steps:

Power off > Hold green key & 3 key & *key > Power on

This will format the drive and delete the problem application. Be careful though, it will also delete the rest of the data on your device. Remember to back up your contacts, tunes, and everything else you want to keep.

N91 starts to teach

Check out Justin’s blog on MySpace. He’s a lecturer who has been given an N91 (how lucky!?), with a view to incorporating the device into teaching and learning.

It's an idea with potential.... Why not ask for a project to be submitted as a podcast? Justin could then download these using podcatching software installed on his N91.

Click here to take a look at Justin’s MySpace. To learn more about podcatching software, click here to read a previous post.

Have you vlogged yet?

If you want to learn more about videoblogging have a look at Alec Saunders’ blog. Over the last few days he has discussed the phenomenon of vlogging, and in doing so raised a few interesting points.

We eagerly await Alec’s first vlog (smoking hot peppers!), filmed with his N91.

N91 battery life prolonged

Here’s one for our German audience. Mr.Foxey from ModernBoard had a few doubts about battery life on the N91. However, sound advice provided by Roadrunner has quashed potential doubts and now Mr. Foxey is soon to become a member of the N91 owners' club.

To extend the battery life of your N91, follow these steps to set your backlight's time-out setting to 5 seconds:

Menu > Tools > Settings > Phone > Display > Light time-out > Options > Change > 5secs > OK

Click here for a previous post with more battery saving tips. Follow this link to join the discussion or hit this link for a translation.

N91 disaster

diefenbaker from MobileBurn has got a friend who dropped an N91, breaking the slider. This is the first such incident that I have heard of. However, if you are unlucky enough to go through a similar ordeal, never fear! The good news is that a Nokia service centre can repair the damage for around 30-40 pounds.

One positive point that can be taken from this accident is that the N91's hard drive remained completely unharmed, thus disproving any fragility myths.

Click here to join the discussion, or simply to offer diefenbaker’s mate your condolences!

N91 - love or hate?

It seems the N91 is a hot topic in the blogosphere at the moment. David Field loves its HUGE 4GB internal memory. He gives the design the thumbs up too, an opinion which is certainly not shared by usmell who likens the N91 to a “small continent”!

Click here to have your say.

Ride with an N91

Check out Matthew Miller's blog post, he is obviously enjoying the capabilities of the multi-purpose N91. Matthew provides a link to a video he shot with an N91. It’s worth a watch but it might give you a stiff neck!

Click here to find out more.

N91 too big!

fade2wo3lack from Howard forums wants to know how big the N91 actually is, compared to a SLVR for example. The N91 is undeniably larger and heavier but the two devices are at opposite ends of the mobile device spectrum. The N91 is a top spec mobile device, making phone calls is just one of the many strings to its bow. Its popularity certainly doesn't depend on its appearance!

N91 jack is back

triops, from German community Das Handy Forum, wants a mobile device which has the ability to replace an MP3 player. Aikon has suggested the N91 on the grounds that the 3.5mm jack ensures crisp audio.

Take a second look

Have a look at this image from Flickr. It was taken with the N91's 2 megapixel camera. Look closely and you can see a review of the new Nokia firmware updater software.

Hard drive maintenance

Richo.G has lost the songs on his N91 and would like to know if the N91's hard drive can be formatted. You can format your hard drive by pressing:

Menu>Tools>Hard drive>Options>Tools>Format hard drive

Formatting the hard drive will clear any data stored on it. This should be a last resort and we'd suggest trying to scan the hard drive first. This will attempt to fix any hard drive disk errors. If your N91 does not have the scan option (some don’t) then connect to your PC in mass storage mode, right click on the F: drive, then hit scan.

N91 on the run

Mayhs on Howard Forums is concerned that jogging with the N91 is a bit too risky because of the hard drive. This shouldn't be a cause for concern. Click here to see a previous post which includes a video all about mini hard drives used in mobile devices. Also have a look at the Engadget N91 drop test article covered here.

N91 takes a bow

Have a look at this blog on All About Symbian from Ewan Spence. It gives an insightful and honest account of life with an N91. N91 owners and prospective buyers alike should find this useful.

N91 voice commands

O-RzA from Howard forums has performed an N91 firmware update and can no longer change the N91's profile via voice command. After my upgrade I had to re-activate voice commands for starting applications and profiles. So if you are experiencing the same problem as O-RzA, try this:

Menu>Tools>Voice cm>profiles

Click here and help O-RzA out.

Name change

Last week, Nokia announced plans to move away from their current naming convention (5110, N91, E70 etc) by giving some devices names.

oneclick from MobileBurn thinks this will lead to a weakening of Nokia's brand identity. What do you think? Does the name ‘N91’ lack imagination? Follow this link to join the MobileBurn conversation.

N91-WiFi

brvendetta from Howard forums has provided a link to download ParkWifi. This app from Nokia automatically detects free Nokia ParkWiFi networks (click here for more info).

N91 users will also find this tool useful for finding non-ParkWiFi networks quickly. If you live in Coventry (England) then ParkWifi will be especially useful due to the installation of citywide free WiFi (click here to learn more).

Follow this link to check out Howard forums. While we are on the subject, Tpwinko from What Mobile wants a device with WiFi, click here to advise.

Do not attempt with N91!

If you fancy a chuckle, check out this post by elmo01 in phoneArena. Please don't practice with your N91!

Intrigued? Check it out here.

N91 back cover

irfanamin2’s N91 hangs when the back cover is on but works fine when the cover is removed. J.A.F. has suggested a hard drive problem.

It is far more likely that the sensor on the back of the N91 has a fault and is not correctly sensing when the cover is in place. Take it to a Nokia service centre and they will fix it.

Follow this link to join this discussion in GSM-Forum.

Handy N91 app

You might want to try this new application from Epocware. It's called Handy Taskman and it lists your running and recently run applications. It also offers a keyword search, the ability to launch apps, a great memory usage display and quite a few other features.

We think it could be quite useful and it's performed well in our tests. Novascape from My-Symbian has also tested it on his N91 and hasn’t experienced any problems either.

Back up that N91!

Members of Italian community telefonio.net worry about losing data from their N91 hard drives when updating their firmware online.

To clarify - the data stored on your N91's hard drive will not be lost during a firmware upgrade. However, data stored on the device memory such as contacts and user-installed applications may be deleted during the upgrade. So back up your data beforehand using Nokia PC Suite.

N91 and podcatcher software

After experiencing an N91 download a podcast via a WiFi connection and podcatching software, blogger James Corbett has realised that it’s time for an upgrade!

help dodgydaz decide

dodgydaz from AVForums is getting a new device and really wants it to have WiFi and a good camera.  Originally it was a toss up between the N73 and N80.

apolloa has suggested the N91. Click here to have your say.

N91 a.k.a 'The Tank'?

Have a look at this thread on Head-Fi.  jonnywolfet thinks the N91 is too big. patschreyer agrees the N91 is big but praises its solidity and robustness, saying the device is "built like a tank".

N91 D.I.Y software updater

It’s here! N91 users can now update their own firmware. I did mine today and now have version  2.00.052 installed on my device.  Just make sure you remember to back up the content on your device.

N91 movie commands

Duni, from German community ModernBoard, wants a movie player for the N91 that has a fast forward and rewind function.  Kris has kindly pointed out that this is possible on RealPlayer.  Just hold your joystick up to fast forward, or down to rewind. It’s that simple.

Nokia flagship store

According to Tong Zhang from Mobile Tech Review, September the 9th will see the opening of Nokia’s flagship store on New York’s Fifth Avenue.  Such stores offer a wide range of devices and consumers benefit from expert staff who can provide guidance throughout the buying process.

SpiralFrog

Attention N91 users! If you hate paying for music downloads then you'll be pleased to hear that a new online music store called SpiralFrog is due to launch in December. The new company is funded solely by advertising, thus you'll get to download music for FREE!  SpiralFrog is backed by Universal so there's a good chance you will hear more from this bizarrely named company.

So far SpiralFrog has received a mixed reception, click here to see a blog by a chap called glenn.

N91's 3.5mm audio jack

Members of GSMArena are deciding which mobile device has the most impressive music capability.  traveller604 loves the N91 and the fact that it has a 3.5mm jack, so there's no need for an adapter.

If you appreciate a good (heated) debate, this thread will definitely be of interest to you, click here and check it out.
